This month we celebrated World Book Day! World Book Day was created by UNESCO in 1995, and acknowledges how literacy impacts our lives through books and reading.
World Book Day is a worldwide celebration of books and reading and serves as a reminder that reading is fun, relevant, accessible, exciting and has the power to transform lives.
As storytellers, we thrive on books – whether for work or for pleasure, today we celebrate the impact of literacy in our industry.
In honour of World Book Day, we asked The Connectors at BTI to reflect on their own relationship with books and share their favourites:

PARVEEN
An oldie and a classic that everyone should read about leadership, success and life in general: How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie. Follow this up with High Performance Habits by Brendon Burchard. To become a high performer, you must seek clarity, generate energy, raise necessity, increase productivity, develop influence, and demonstrate courage. These are the personal and social habits that are proven to help you excel. This book is about the art and science of how to practice these proven habits.

I loved Origin by Dan Brown because it explored the world of AI and the extreme path it could take. It stirred up emotions of fright and uneasiness in me. The Midnight Library by Matt Haig explores the “path not taken” and the consequences of what could have been. This book made me reflect on my own goal of living with no regrets. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid was an interesting look into the private life of a glamorous “star.” It made me realize that we should not just believe what we read – lives are so much more complex than we could ever imagine.
THERA-LEE
My favourite books would have to be the Harry Potter series. I read it as a younger person and fell in love with them. I would also recommend, The Giver, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, 1984, The Handmaid’s Tale, and of course, Agatha Christie’s, And Then There Were None.
BRITTANY
I will never forget the first time I read The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. A beautiful story with just the right combination of reality and magic. For non-fiction, I love reading The Power of Now by Ekhart Tolle, Spirit Junkie by Gabbie Bernstien, Stolen Focus by Johann Hari and Slow Medicine by Victoria Sweet. These are all great reminders for living a focused and present life, something I am working on everyday!
EMILY
My favourite classic is The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It is a story of how a genuinely curious child experiences the wonders of nature and humanity, and how his gentle spirit responds to it. It has always stayed with me.
CHRISTINE
One of my favourite books has to be the classic Les Misérables by Victor Hugo. Les Misérables is a classical non-fiction French novel capturing the many morally grey cast of characters in the varied social classes during the time period of the French Revolution.
It captures the diverse circumstances of the characters and through their perspectives, the portrayal of the human experience is placed at the forefront of this novel. Through their experiences, the literature encapsulates the progression of atonement, forgiveness, guilt, sacrifice and devotion, the element of the human experience.
CHESNEY
After watching the Dune live-action remake with Zendaya and Timothy Charlamet, I couldn’t wait for the next movie, so I decided to read ahead into the story and finished reading Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert. My favourite aspect of this book is how it tells a fictional story about the negative implications of people putting all their trust in politicians.
NAINA
One of my all-time favourite books has to be Finding Chika by Mitch Albom. I started reading this book during the pandemic when I felt a bit lost during lockdowns. The book’s overall message was about “hope” and how having hope can do wonders for you. The line from the book that has a special place in my heart is, “Hopelessness can be contagious. But hope can be, too, and there is no medicine to match it.” This book taught me to be more optimistic, and I am still amused by how I learned so much from a six-year-old little Chika.
SRUJANI
A few of my recent favourite books are Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard, Ten Types of Innovation: The Discipline of Building Breakthroughs by Larry Keeley, Ryan Pikkel, Brian Quinn, Helen Walters, The Design Thinking Toolbox by Larry J. Leifer, Michael Lewrick, and Patrick Link, Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari, Van Gogh: The Life by Steven Naifeh and Gregory White-Smith.
DANNY
I chose The Family by Mario Puzo because I’ve read previous novels from him which I really liked. I was also interested in the Renaissance time period, having studied many artists from that time period.
SHASHI
I’m not much of a reader, but two books I really enjoyed reading were The Henna Artist and its sequel The Secret Keeper of Jaipur by Alka Joshi. I read these in a book club that my niece formed during Covid with my nieces and sisters-in-law. She sent us all the books and we would meet virtually online to discuss the book, what we read, and just to catch up at a time when get-togethers were not allowed.
JEFF
If I had to choose one book, I would choose Justice: What’s the Right Thing to Do by Michael Sandel. I am not much of a reader these days but that is one I always enjoyed!
