Mindful Buying: How We’re Thinking Differently About What We Purchase
With more people paying closer attention to where their products come from, buying decisions are becoming more intentional than ever. Whether it’s choosing locally made goods, supporting sustainable brands, or re-evaluating supply chains, there’s a growing awareness of the impact behind each purchase. These everyday choices have the potential to shape market trends and drive positive change. At BTI, our team has been reflecting on how this shift has influenced our own shopping habits. In this studio update, we’re sharing personal insights on the small but meaningful ways we’ve adjusted what we buy, where we buy it, and why it matters.

I am often asked why I don’t work with teams and service providers outside of Canada. My response is simple: I want to help provide opportunities to local businesses and people. Employing Canadians and providing job opportunities to diverse communities in our backyard is how BTI was built.
Staying true to our core strengths and finding partners who are local has allowed us to pay close attention to the details and provide the best solutions for our client partners. With the 25% tariffs coming our way, we need to be supportive of our client partners who rely on their US friends for parts and more to sell in Canada. Other partners who sell into the US, who will now have an additional 25% tariff to account for, will need to figure out how to absorb or pass on the added cost. We need to find ways we can work together with them to weather the storm and be a true partner.

I use two apps—Shop Canadian and Check the Label—to scan grocery items and ensure I’m buying Canadian products. Plus, I’m in the process of switching my Ayurvedic beauty products from an American brand to a Canadian one (Sahajan) to further support local businesses.

I’ve been paying more attention to buying Canadian-produced meats and produce for a while now. Working in Streetsville makes it easy to support local restaurants; shout out to Pita Nutso, Stavro’s and Skyway Jack’s!
I love touring Canada; I’ve done some and want to see a lot more. And, I love and support many Canadian bands—The Sam Roberts Band, Matt Mays, Big Wreck, and many more. 🙂

I’ve moved and traveled a lot, and wherever I go, I love embracing everything local. One thing that’s really important to me is having a great sweatshirt outfit, since I practically live in them when I’m not working. Lately, I’ve been buying more clothes from Canadian brands like Roots and Province of Canada. While I’ve always embraced and explored everything local and Canadian, it feels like it makes more sense now than ever. For things that matter to me, I’ve really connected with the Canadian spirit. It’s not just about supporting Canadian brands, though—I’m also focused on supporting local businesses, especially cafes and restaurants, and I choose them over chains whenever I can.

I love supporting local businesses whenever I can, and one of my favourite spots to do that is Main Street Unionville. The street is filled with charming, independently run shops and restaurants, making it the perfect place for an evening stroll. Whether I’m grabbing a bite to eat, enjoying ice cream from Old Firehall Confectionary, or browsing through unique accessories at Pretty Thingz (much to my husband’s dismay!), it’s always a great way to spend time in the community.

I love supporting Canadian businesses in simple, everyday ways. I pick up my groceries from the local farmers’ market, knowing I’m helping out small producers in my community. Whenever I get the chance, I take road trips to explore small towns and cities across Canada, discovering hidden gems along the way. I also enjoy strolling through artisan markets, finding unique, locally made pieces. It’s my way of giving back and celebrating the incredible talent and hard work of Canadians. Here are some Canadian brands that I love: Boston Pizza , Harvey’s , and Milestones Grill and Bar.

I’ve been thinking more about the importance of eating seasonal produce that can be grown in Canada. While winter makes this challenging, it has motivated me to plan ahead for my garden and explore ways to become more self-sufficient. I also love Oneka hair care products, which are grown and produced on a family farm in Quebec.

How I support Canada is by trying my best to support local small businesses, mainly local cafes and mom & pop restaurants. I’ll also opt for Canadian owned businesses like Fortinos, Canadian Tire & Home Hardware. When possible, and based on quality, I’ll always try to buy products that are made in Canada… especially ice cream! Kawartha Dairy Ice Cream!

The most significant area where I’m focusing on buying Canadian products is at grocery stores, where I now prioritize Canadian-made items before making a purchase. The same is done for any items that we now purchase.
Our family has also adjusted our vacation plans to explore more of Canada—there are so many beautiful and fascinating places to visit. To further support Canada, conversations with friends include suggestions and new ways in which we may both do the same.
Supporting Canadian businesses is about more than economic impact; it strengthens our resilience and sense of community. From the choices we make at the grocery store to the restaurants we visit and the brands we wear, every decision helps build a stronger local economy. As we navigate challenges like tariffs and shifting markets, our commitment to Canadian businesses and partnerships becomes even more critical. By investing in local talent and resources, we not only sustain our economy but also uphold the values that make Canada unique.
